THE HIV and AIDS pandemic calls for a coordinated approach if concerted efforts to mitigate the impact of the epidemic are to yield positive results.

Cognisant of that, the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society joined other AIDS service organisations in the exhibition at the 2007 National AIDS Expo that was being coordinated by Tibatane/ Sibambane Consultancy in collaboration with the country’s HIV and AIDS coordinating body, the National AIDS Council, which provided technical support.

The CBHA (Community Based HIV and AIDS) Programme is volunteer driven and aims at alleviating the suffering of the most vulnerable populations in Zimbabwe with the assistance the Society receives from its partners – Danish Red Cross, Japanese Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies through the consortium. The programme also receives material support from the National AIDS Council and UNICEF to mention a few.

Summary:

The overall strategy of ZRCS in combating the HIV and AIDS pandemic is through the community based approach. This is hinged on social and psycho-social support to people living with HIV & AIDS and OVC and prevention. Subsequently, the National Society has adopted the following five key strategic initiatives:

? Strengthening the capacity of families to care for the family members living with HIV and AIDS and to protect and care for their OVC

? Mobilize and strengthen social support systems and community based responses for HIV and AIDS).
