The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS) has conferred Humanitarian Ambassador Status on celebrated local sungura music icon Alick Macheso. The status is in recognition of Macheso’s philanthropic activities over the years.

In his remarks, ZRCS National President Mr Edison Mlambo said Macheso’s appointment was in view of his contributions to the local humanitarian sector. “As a leading humanitarian and disaster relief organisation, we are touched by the work Macheso has been doing through holding the annual Benefit Concerts for Chitungwiza General Hospital, paying schools fees for orphans among other individual philanthropic activities. The Chitungwiza Hospital Annual Benefit concert has immensely contributed to the medical centre’s recent ISO certification.

In his acceptance speech, Macheso thanked the Red Cross for recognising his efforts towards alleviating human suffering. “I believe this honour goes to say there are people out there who have been noticing my contributions towards the welfare of ordinary Zimbabweans. I had an equally difficult childhood but thanks to other warm hearted people who came to my aid, I managed to achieve the little I have accomplished this far”.

Macheso’s Ambassadorial role will see him partnering the organisation is a number of humanitarian advocacy programmes. The musician in particular will contribute towards local fundraising efforts as well as penning songs and jingles for the organisation. The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society commented Macheso for remaining modest regardless of his achievements in the local music industry. They also revealed that they will be launching the Support a Zimbabwean campaign this year towards local fundraising for humanitarian programme. Macheso will be the face of the initiative given his new found status.
